As of October 2026, Tesla appears to have stopped selling the Solar Roof. Trade press reported in August that Tesla told its installers it will supply solar panels only. Tesla has not made a public announcement.
We do not install the Tesla Solar Roof, and we never have. We are a roofer, and we put new roofs on lake homes around Crosby, Brainerd, and the Whitefish Chain. People ask us about it often enough that a plain answer is worth writing down.
What happened in August 2026
On August 20, 2026, Electrek reported that Tesla discontinued the Solar Roof. Two sources told the outlet that Tesla informed its certified installers it will no longer supply solar roof tiles, "only solar panels." The Solar Roof page on Tesla's site now sends visitors to the solar panel page. One source said Tesla decided the product "is not financially viable."
Two cautions. Tesla has not confirmed any of this in public, so the report rests on anonymous sources and the website change. And Aurora Solar, which tracks the market, notes the same point: there is no formal announcement.
The product had been fading for a while. In May, Electrek described the Solar Roof as largely gone from Tesla's marketing. It cited a Wood Mackenzie estimate of about 3,000 installs in the U.S. through early 2023, a figure Tesla disputed without giving its own.
What it cost
Electrek put the average Solar Roof at about $106,000 before incentives. A traditional roof with conventional panels came to about $60,000 in the same article. Those are one outlet's averages, not quotes for your house. The article also notes a $6 million class action settlement in 2023 over pricing that rose after customers signed.
The federal tax credit does not soften this anymore. The IRS says the residential clean energy credit covers property installed through December 31, 2025. Systems finished in 2026 do not get it. If you are planning solar, ask your tax preparer about your own situation.
If you already own one
The reporting says existing owners keep their warranty. Aurora Solar writes that existing installations "continue to be supported under their warranty terms," and it calls long-term parts supply "a legitimate question worth raising with Tesla." If you own one, call Tesla Energy and get the answer in writing. Electrek's May story also reported long service waits from some owners.
Snow, ice, and a lake-country roof
We could not find Tesla-specific test data on how the tiles handle Minnesota snow, ice, and hail, so we will not guess. What we can tell you comes from the U.S. Department of Energy. Its winter guidance for solar systems says typical modules are rated around 2,400 pascals, and heavy-snow sites should use modules rated at least 5,000. It also warns that snow piles up at the lower edge of tilted panels.
Ice dams are a roof problem first, whatever sits on top. The University of Minnesota Extension says warm air leaking into the attic is often the main cause. Air sealing and insulation come first. Our own ice dam guide walks through it.
What we would do in your place
If your roof is near the end of its life, put the roof first. Panels on a worn roof mean removing and reinstalling them when the roof fails. That costs real money. A new roof with a clean deck and good flashing is a sound base for panels later.
If you want solar, a conventional panel system on a new roof is the path installers are pointing to now. Get at least two quotes, ask for the snow-load rating of the modules, and ask who is responsible for leaks at the roof penetrations.
We do not install solar, and we will say so up front. We can build the roof under it. Most of our replacements run $9,000 to $22,000 installed. If you want to see our roof replacement process, or check whether your attic insulation is doing its job, that is where to start.
Bottom line
The Tesla Solar Roof is no longer something you can buy, according to reports from August 2026. Fix the roof first. Add panels after, if the numbers work for you.
