Winter Maintenance
What's involved
Winter maintenance is a route, not a rescue. After each major snowfall we work through the cabins on our list — clearing roofs that need it, checking eaves and valleys for ice starting to band, and photographing every roof we touch. Owners get the photos the same day, usually before they knew there was a storm up here.
Snow comes off with poly shovels and roof rakes, never metal against the shingle. We leave a thin layer of snow on the surface so tools never touch the granules. On standing seam metal, most snow slides on its own — those visits are usually eave checks and valley cleanups rather than full clearings.
If we find ice already bonded at the eave, shoveling stops and we tell you what we found. Bonded ice is a steam job — chipping at it cracks cold shingles. That call costs you a conversation, not a damaged roof.

Away all winter?
This service exists because most of our lake customers are not up here between Thanksgiving and ice-out. The cabin sits empty, the snow piles up, and nobody wants to drive four hours round trip to look at a roof. We are twenty minutes away. We check it, we clear it, and you see every visit in photos.

When should snow be cleared off a roof in Minnesota?
Most roofs here are built for normal snow load. The trouble starts after back-to-back storms, heavy wet snow, or deep drifting on one slope — a foot or more sitting on the roof is a good trigger to call. Clearing the lower few feet above the eave also removes the raw material ice dams are made of.
How much does roof snow removal cost?
Most cabins run $300–$800 per visit, depending on roof size, pitch, and how much snow is up there. A steep two-story with deep drifts costs more than a one-story ranch. We quote the price before we start, same as every other job.
Will shoveling damage my shingles?
Not the way we do it. We leave an inch or two of snow on the surface so tools never touch the granules, and we never chip at ice that has bonded to the roof. Bonded ice is a steam job — see our ice dam remediation service.
Can you watch my cabin all winter while I am in the Cities?
Yes. That is most of what this service is. We put your cabin on a route, check the roof and eaves after major storms, clear snow when it needs it, and text or email you photos each visit. You see your roof without the four-hour round trip.
