Closing the lake cabin: a quick roof check before you go

A cabin sits empty all winter. A few minutes on the roof and in the attic before you leave can save a spring surprise.

Crew installing synthetic slate roof tiles on a two-story home in Edina, Minnesota

Before you lock up

Look for missing or lifted shingles, and branches that hang over the roof.

Inside

Check the ceilings and the attic for stains. Make sure vents are clear so the place stays dry.

While you are away

Ask a neighbor to look after big storms. A small leak found in December is a smaller job than one found in May.

Common questions

What should I check on the cabin roof before winter?
Missing or lifted shingles, branches over the roof, and any stains on the ceilings or in the attic.
