Clean gutters before the freeze

Leaves in the gutters hold water. When it freezes, that water has nowhere to go but under the shingles.

Why it matters

Full gutters hold water against the roof edge. In a freeze, that water turns to ice and backs up.

When to do it

After most of the leaves are down and before the first hard freeze.

While you are up there

Look at the shingles along the edge and at the flashing around the chimney. Send a photo if anything looks loose.
